SEEdS GreenNews
SEEdS GreenNews (SGN) is a fun, fast-paced, entertaining and educational weekly 15-minute science news program series for students in grades 9-12 and for grades 6-8. SGN covers cutting-edge developments around the world in environmental research and sustainability practices, and the growth and opportunities in green careers.
SGN is written, produced, and presented with the target audience in mind and challenges students to boost their achievement levels, stay in school, and acquire new skills and knowledge to equip them for success in the 21st century.
SGN helps students to understand the Web of Life, its complexity and the interdependency of all things. Students learn how they can play an important role in creating a sustainable future for our planet, “Spaceship Earth”, right in their own communities and in their future careers.
Each show features a “big picture” science (STEM) segment and scientists, technicians, engineers and/or mathematicians engaged in research, a project, or other systems operation. University undergrad and graduate student research assistants and young people working in green tech careers are shown and interviewed to convey post-secondary education and career possibilities of contributing to this important work while in college and in the workplace.
Use with SEEdS Learning Modules
SEEdS GreenNews presents today’s real-world problems and develops the need for students to know STEM concepts. SEEdS integrates SGN segments into SEEdS for Success learning modules that allow students to develop research, collaboration, communication, and other 21st century skills. By integrating these problem-based learning modules with existing core subjects such as biology and chemistry, we will help many high-need students complete their college preparatory requirements. Follow-on modules will be coordinated with career and technical education (CTE) tracks to further guide these students toward graduation.
SGN Format and Production
Based loosely on the model established by WXXI’s Assignment: The World (http://atwonline.org/), the most successful and longest-running student TV news program series, SEEdS GreenNews uses a strong thematic focus on Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM ) careers in sustainable ecosystems and sustainable development.
SGN is designed for “three-screen” (desktop, TV, and mobile device) 24/7 viewing by way of the Kaltura online video platform. Students will view and use SGN content in the classroom, at home, and on-the-go, and interact with their teachers and each other in SGN social media communities.
SGN is produced by video professionals in conjunction with researchers, industry specialists, and students interested in journalism and media.
Two student hosts, one male and one female in the late-teens age range will host, report, and engage viewers with SGN content and facilitate their interaction with the show and other viewers.
Students in the Marketing, Media & Information Technology Education CTE program cluster of Pima County JTED gain professional experience in paid internships in production of SEEdS GreenNews as production technicians and field reporters. Local and national broadcast and digital media industry professionals mentor these students and provide networking opportunities for industry internships and career opportunities.
SEEdS GreenNews student hosts and reporters connect via satellite and web video with top scientists, engineers and researchers in their labs and in the field and give students an inside look into their exciting and dramatic work that pushes the frontiers of environmental science and technology. The scientific research, technological developments, and breakthroughs from around the world are communicated and demonstrated directly by the professionals doing the work, creating the real world context for why their work is important for the future of our planet.
Whenever possible for each show, the hosts and student reporters conduct interviews on-site and remotely with scientists and engineers in their labs and in the field. Existing b-roll video and other content from these sources will be edited into these segments. A news feed from the Associated Press (or other news organization) provides related news content that is woven into the program stories.
The show’s first season content draws largely from the work being conducted by the University of Arizona, a Tier I Research Land Grant University with particular strengths in interdisciplinary fields of Biotechnology, Optics, and Earth and Environmental Science, and the home for the state’s Cooperative Extension programs. The work of the UA extends and connects globally with institutions and organizations, giving SGN an open avenue and a connective source of content.
SEEdS GreenNews originates from its location in Tucson, Arizona and is produced using the TriCaster remote production system. Each school year, SEEdS Global News produces 36 weeks of programming distributed to students and teachers across Pima County and throughout the U.S.
SEEdS GreenNews is a production of SEEdS TV, a part of the Sustainable Ecosystems Education in Science (SEEdS) Project which is a collaboration of the University of Arizona and Pima County school districts.
